What is a Spirit?
In the world of alcohol, spirits are the heavy hitters; bold, distilled beverages with a higher alcohol content and a long tradition of craftsmanship. Unlike beer or wine, which are simply fermented, spirits go through a second process called distillation, which removes water and impurities, concentrating both the flavor and the alcohol. This is what gives spirits their signature strength, typically ranging from 35% to 50% ABV and sometimes even higher.
Spirits are made by fermenting natural ingredients like grains, sugarcane, potatoes, or fruits, and then distilling the resulting alcohol to increase its purity. The result is a wide variety of liquors such as whiskey, vodka, rum, gin, tequila, brandy, and mezcal, each defined by its ingredients, regional origins, and aging process.
Technically, for a drink to be classified as a spirit, it must be distilled and contain no added sugars. Once sweeteners, herbs, or flavorings are introduced, think amaretto, absinthe, or schnapps, it falls into the category of a liqueur. Spirits, by contrast, are pure expressions of alcohol and distillation technique, often aged in barrels to develop deeper complexity.
In the U.S., spirits are also referred to as hard liquor, a term that sets them apart from lower-ABV drinks like beer or wine. Every bottle of liquor sold must meet strict labeling guidelines from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), including the spirit type, ABV or proof, origin, and bottler information, all part of maintaining consumer trust and transparency.
